What is Exposure?
The amount of light that contacts the sensor which directly correlates with lightness or darkness of the image captured
What are Exposure Stops?
A unit of measurement that measures the change in luminance.
1 Stop is defined as:
2 times the amount of light if the stop is positive
½ the amount of light if the stop if negative
What is Dynamic Range
The range that is perceptible between lightness and darkness values, from the lightest to the darkest
Human perception is around 24 stops
Digital photography is between 12 and 15 stops
What are the Exposure Tools?
Aperture (F-Stop)
Shutter Speed
Light
ISO (sort of, not really)
What is Aperture?
Opening inside the lens that lets a regulated amount of light through
Blades inside the lens open and close depending on the aperture setting
For f-stop the smaller the number the larger the opening which = more light
What is Shutter Speed?
Measurement of the time that the shutter is open, exposing the sensor to the amount of light coming through the lens
Fractions of a second
1/2 more light
1/500 less light
The slower the shutter closes the more light gets captured.
The faster the shutter closes the less light is captured
What is ISO?
The sensors sensitivity to light. The larger the number the more sensitive the sensor becomes
As the sensitivity increases, the less light it takes & the amount of digital artifacts and noise increase
The image starts to become more degraded as the ISO increases
Normal operating range of ISO is between 100 and 1600
In simple terms what do the numbers in Aperture mean?
Lower Numbers = More Light
Higher Numbers = Less Light
In simple terms what do the numbers in Shutter Speed mean?
Lower Numbers (Slower) = More Light
Higher Numbers (Faster) = Less Light
What is the difference between Aperture (f-stop) and Shutter Speed?
Aperture (f-stop)
how blurry the background of the image is (depth of field)
Shutter Speed
how sharp/clear the image is
What are good starter settings for being Inside?
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/100
Aperture: Wideset (f2.8-f5.6)
What are good starter settings for being Outside?
ISO 100
Shutter: 1/500
Aperture: Middle Range (f4.0-f8)
What are all the standard stops for Aperture?
f/2.8 f/4 f/5.6 f/8 f/11 f/16 f/22
What are all the standard stops for Shutter Speed?
1/500 1/250 1/125 1/60 1/30 1/15 1/8 1/4 1/2
