Octet Rule
In chemistry, the principle that atoms are more stable when they have eight electrons in their valence shell.
First Shell (Energy Level)
The first energy level of an atom which can hold a maximum of 2 electrons.
Second Shell (Energy Level)
The second energy level of an atom which can hold a maximum of 8 electrons; must be filled after the first shell.
Subatomic Particles
Particles that are smaller than an atom, including protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Electrons
Negatively charged subatomic particles that reside in energy levels or shells around the nucleus of an atom.
Nucleus
The center of an atom, containing protons and neutrons.
