Radiograph
An image produced on a photosensitive surface or digital sensor by the passage of X-rays through an object or body.
Central Ray (CR)
The primary beam of X-rays that exits the X-ray tube and is directed towards the image receptor (IR), playing a crucial role in producing a clear and accurate image.
Functions of a Radiographic Exam
Includes positioning the body part and aligning it with the IR and CR, implementing radiation protection measures, selecting exposure factors, providing breathing instructions, and processing the IR.
Four Fundamental Planes in Anatomy

Anterior vs Posterior Surfaces

Axial Projection

AP vs PA Projections
AP (anteroposterior) projection involves the X-ray beam entering the front and exiting the back, while PA (posteroanterior) projection has it entering the back and exiting the front.
Supine Position
The patient lies flat on their back, facing upward.
Prone Position
The patient lies flat on their stomach, facing downward.
Lateral Position Significance
Provides a side view of the body, with the side closest to the image receptor (IR) being the focus.
Oblique Position
An angled position where the body is rotated so that neither the sagittal nor coronal plane is perpendicular to the image receptor.
Trendelenburg Position
The patient lies on their back with the legs elevated higher than the head.
Decubitus Positions
Refer to the patient lying down with a horizontal X-ray beam, named for the surface of the body the patient is lying on.
Modified Lithotomy Position
A variation of the lithotomy position, used for gynecological examinations, where the patient lies on their back with legs elevated and supported.
Mediolateral Projection
A radiographic view where the X-ray beam passes from the medial side to the lateral side of the body.
Dorsal Decubitus Position
The patient lies on their back with the X-ray beam directed horizontally.
Purpose of Oblique Projections
Used to visualize structures that may be obscured in standard AP or PA views, providing a clearer image of certain anatomical features.
Lateromedial vs Mediolateral Projections
Lateromedial projection involves the X-ray beam passing from the lateral side to the medial side, opposite to the mediolateral projection.
Significance of Recumbent Position
Refers to any position where the patient is lying down, important for certain imaging techniques and patient comfort.
Modified Sims' Position
A variation of the Sims' position where the patient lies on their side with one leg drawn up and the other leg straight.
Axial (Superoinferior) Projection
A type of radiographic projection where the X-ray beam is directed along the long axis of the body from superior to inferior.
AP Axial vs Semiaxial Projections
AP axial projection involves angling the X-ray beam towards the patient's head or feet, while semiaxial projection may involve a less steep angle.
Tangential Projections
Radiographic images taken with the X-ray beam directed tangentially to a curved surface, allowing for better visualization of specific anatomical structures.
Medial and Lateral Terms Relationship
Medial refers to a position closer to the midline of the body, while lateral refers to a position further away from the midline.
Proximal and Distal Terms Relationship
Proximal refers to a position closer to the point of attachment or origin, while distal refers to a position further away from the point of attachment.
Cephalad and Caudad Terms
Cephalad refers to a direction towards the head, while caudad refers to a direction towards the tail or feet.
Ipsilateral and Contralateral Terms
Ipsilateral refers to structures on the same side of the body, while contralateral refers to structures on opposite sides.
Flexion vs Extension Movements
Flexion decreases the angle of a joint, while extension increases the angle of a joint.
Hyperextension vs Hyperflexion
Hyperextension is the excessive extension of a limb or joint beyond its normal range, while hyperflexion is the excessive flexion of a limb or joint.
Dorsiflexion vs Plantar Flexion
Dorsiflexion decreases the angle between the dorsum of the foot and the lower leg (toes upward), while plantar flexion decreases the angle toward the plantar surface (toes downward).
Ulnar Deviation vs Radial Deviation
Ulnar deviation involves bending the wrist towards the ulnar side, while radial deviation involves bending the wrist towards the radial side.
Inversion vs Eversion of the Foot
Inversion (varus) is the inward turning of the foot at the ankle, while eversion (valgus) is the outward turning of the foot at the ankle.
Abduction vs Adduction Movements
Abduction is the movement of a part away from the central axis of the body, while adduction is the movement of a part toward the central axis of the body.
Supinate vs Pronate Forearm Movement
