Knowledge Test Passing Requirements
An applicant must correctly answer 15 out of 20 questions in each of the two sections: motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs.

Residential Area Speed Limit
25 miles per hour, unless otherwise posted.
School Zone Speed Limit
20 mph during restricted times.
Standard Freeway Speed Limit
65 mph on freeways with paved shoulders, unless otherwise posted.
Child Safety Seat Requirement
Required for infants and children under the age of four and/or who weigh less than 40 pounds.
Booster Seat Requirement
Required for children at least four but less than eight years of age, unless they are 4’ 9" or taller.
Safety Zone (Motorcyclists)
A following distance of at least three seconds maintained between a car and a motorcyclist.
Standard Following Distance
A minimum of three seconds during normal weather and traffic conditions.
Bad Weather Following Distance
Four or five seconds.
Turn Signal Distance
Signals must be activated at least 100 feet before making a turn or lane change.
Parallel Parking Requirement
The vehicle's wheels must be within 12 inches of the curb.
Passing Prohibitions
Drivers may not pass other vehicles within 100 feet of a bridge, viaduct, tunnel, railroad crossing, or intersection.
Chemical Test Refusal Penalty
License suspension for one to five years if a driver arrested for OVI refuses a chemical test.
Underage OVI BAC Threshold (Under 21)
A blood alcohol content (BAC) between 0.02\text{%} and 0.08\text{%}.
Adult OVI BAC Limit (Age 21 or older)
It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08\text{%} or higher.
Solid Yellow Line (Next to Broken Yellow Line)
Indicates that vehicles next to the broken line may pass, while those next to the solid line may not.
Hydroplaning
When tires lose contact with the road and ride on a layer of water, which can occur at speeds as low as 30 mph.
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Emergency Procedure
Drivers should press and hold the brake pedal firmly and steer out of danger.
Non-ABS Emergency Procedure
The driver should firmly pump the brakes to stop quickly while maintaining steering control.
Uphill Parking (with a Curb)
The steering wheel should be turned away from the curb so the vehicle will roll into the curb if the brakes fail.
Uphill or Downhill Parking (no Curb)
The wheels should be turned to the right, toward the side of the road.
Hand Signal: Stop
The driver's left arm and hand are extended downward.
Hand Signal: Right Turn
The driver's left arm and hand are extended upward.
Octagonal Sign
A red, eight-sided sign that is always a stop sign.
Downward-Facing Triangular Sign
Indicates that drivers must yield the right-of-way.
Pennant-Shaped Sign
Indicates a no passing zone.
Pentagonal Sign
Indicates a school zone.
Diamond-Shaped Sign
Warns of existing or possible hazards, usually colored yellow or orange.
Round Sign
Warns of an upcoming railroad crossing.
Crossbuck Sign
Tells drivers to yield to trains at a railroad crossing.
Orange and Red Triangular Sign
A sign posted on the back of slow-moving vehicles that often travel at speeds slower than 25 mph.
Steady Yellow Traffic Light
Indicates a red light is about to appear; drivers must stop unless already within the intersection.
Flashing Red Light
A signal that should be treated exactly like a stop sign.
Flashing Yellow Light
Warns of a hazard; drivers should slow down and proceed with caution.
Regulatory Signs
Usually white with black markings; these signs regulate the movement of traffic and must be obeyed.
Guide Signs
Signs with a green background that provide directional and mileage information.
