Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space (has volume).
Physical Property
Something that can be measured without changing the identity of the substance.
Chemical Property
A property that can only be observed during a chemical change.
Intensive Property
A property that is non-dependent on mass.
Extensive Property
Property that is dependent on mass.
Physical Change
A change in the state or appearance of the matter.
Chemical Change
A change in molecular structure.
Mixtures
A substance that can be separated physically or chemically.
Pure Substance
A substance that cannot be separated physically or chemically.
Homogenous Mixtures
Mixtures that are the same throughout, visually.
Heterogenous Mixtures
Mixtures that have variations throughout.
Elements
Cannot be made from other substances, cannot be separated into other substances, smallest particle is an atom or a diatomic molecule.
Compounds
Are made from other substances, have a fixed composition, look different from their components, very hard to separate into their components, smallest particle is a molecule.
Mixtures
Are made from other substances, have variable composition, usually resemble at least one of their components, usually easy to separate into their components, can be made of atoms or molecules.
solid
definite volume, definite shape
Liquid
definite volume, indefinite shape
Gas
Indefinite volume, indefinite shape
Filtration
Separation by size
Evaporation
Separation by boiling point (lose the substance with lower BP)
Distillation
Separation based on boiling point
Chromatography
Separation based on polarity
