why were the trenches so unhygienic?

  • summer - sewage from latrines + corpses made the smell dreadful and caused a rapid increase in bacteria

  • winter - severe weather due to rain and flooding caused frostbite. eg - december 1914, 6000 cases of frostbite.

why were lice / rats such a problem?

rats would feed on dead bodies and would spread disease.

lice infested clothes / sleeping blankets so they got trench fever.
