why were the trenches so unhygienic?
summer - sewage from latrines + corpses made the smell dreadful and caused a rapid increase in bacteria
winter - severe weather due to rain and flooding caused frostbite. eg - december 1914, 6000 cases of frostbite.
why were lice / rats such a problem?
rats would feed on dead bodies and would spread disease.
lice infested clothes / sleeping blankets so they got trench fever.
why did illness spread rapidly?
soldiers fought, ate and slept very close to each other.
