Ionic Compound
A compound formed from the electrostatic attraction between positive (cation) and negative (anion) ions.
Cation
A positively charged ion.
Anion
A negatively charged ion.
Binary Nonmetal Compound
A molecular compound composed of two nonmetals.
Writing Formulas of Ionic Compounds
Write the formula by placing the cation first followed by the anion.
Naming Ionic Compounds
Name the cation followed by the anion; for anions, end with 'ide'.
Mono-
Prefix meaning one (1).
Di-
Prefix meaning two (2).
Tri-
Prefix meaning three (3).
Tetra-
Prefix meaning four (4).
Writing Formulas of Binary Nonmetal Compounds
The formula is created by combining the elements according to their prefixes.
Naming Binary Nonmetal Compounds
Use prefixes to indicate the number of each atom, and end the second element with 'ide'.
Dinitrogen Tetroxide
The compound with the formula N2O4.
Phosphorus Trichloride
The compound with the formula PCl3.
Sulfur Hexafluoride
The compound with the formula SF6.
