Definition of Mental Disorder
significant problem with thoughts, emotions, or behaviors caused by a disruption in psychological, biological, or developmental functioning, and it usually causes serious distress or difficulty in daily life.
What is not grounds for mental disorder
Normal reactions to stressful events, culturally accepted behaviors, or behaviors that differ from social norms are not mental disorders unless they result from an underlying dysfunction.
What determines need for treatment
symptom severity, symptom salience (e.g., the presence of suicidal thoughts), the individual’s distress (mental pain) associated with the symptom(s), disability related to the individual’s symptoms, risks and benefits of available treatments, and other factors (e.g., psychiatric symptoms complicating other illness)
