Constitutional Convention
A gathering of delegates from the 13 Colonies in 1787 to discuss and create a new Constitution.
Federalists
Supporters of the Constitution who argued for a strong central government.
Anti-Federalists
Opponents of the Constitution who feared a strong central government would lead to tyranny.
Federalist Papers
A series of essays written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay to promote the ratification of the Constitution.
Brutus No. 1
An essay written by Robert Yates arguing against the Constitution, claiming a strong central government would be too disconnected from the people.
Ratification
The official approval of the Constitution, which required nine out of thirteen states to agree.
Articles of Confederation
The original governing document of the United States, which was ultimately deemed ineffective, leading to the creation of the Constitution.
Factions
Groups of people with shared interests that may work against the common good, a concept discussed in Federalist No. 10.
Limited Government
A principle in which the powers of the government are restricted by law to protect individual rights.
