Data
Raw facts or figures that have no meaning until processed.
Information
Processed data that is organized and presented to be meaningful and relevant.
Data Processing Cycle
A five-stage sequence—collection, preparation, input, processing, and output—that turns raw data into information.
Collection
The first stage of the cycle where data is gathered; the data collected is called raw data.
Preparation
The second stage where data is prepared for use by checking quality, ensuring correct units, and including necessary time periods.
Input
The stage where data is entered into the computer so software can process it.
Processing
The stage in which data is transformed through steps (such as sorting and arranging) to produce information.
Output
The stage where the processed information is displayed or returned to the user (e.g., graphs, audio, documents).
Raw data
Data that has been collected but not yet processed; examples include numbers, days, and measurements.
GIGO
Garbage In, Garbage Out — poor-quality input leads to poor-quality output.
Unit
A unit of measurement used for data values (e.g., Degree Celsius) to ensure consistency.
Temperature data example
An example of input data such as 35°C, 34°C, 33°C, 32°C, 36°C on corresponding days (Mon–Fri) used to illustrate the cycle.
