Traffic Lane
A section of road for a single line of traffic.
Lane Markings
Markings on road surfaces that help drivers know which part of the road to use and understand traffic rules.
Single Solid Yellow Line
Marks the center of a road with two-way traffic; do not pass a vehicle in front of you if this line is on your side of the road.
Double Solid Yellow Lines
Lines that indicate you should not pass and must stay to the right, unless in an HOV lane with a left entrance, instructed by construction signs, or turning left to enter/exit a driveway.
Barrier
Two sets of solid double yellow lines spaced 2 or more feet apart; do not drive on or over this barrier except at designated openings.
Broken Yellow Line
Indicates you may pass if the broken line is next to your driving lane and it is safe.
Single Solid White Line
Marks traffic lanes going in the same direction, including one-way streets.
Double Solid White Lines
Indicates a lane barrier between a regular use and a preferential use lane (such as HOV) or near freeway ramps; never change lanes over these lines.
Broken White Lines
Separate traffic lanes on roads with 2 or more lanes in the same direction.
End of Lane Markings
Large broken lines that indicate a freeway or street lane is ending or approaching an exit.
Yield Line
A line of solid white triangles that point towards approaching vehicles to show where to yield or stop.
Number 1 Lane
The left (or fast) lane of traffic, often used for passing or turning left.
Number 2 Lane
The lane located immediately to the right of the Number 1 Lane.
Passing Lane
The far left lane on a multilane road closest to the center divider, used to pass other vehicles.
High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lane
A special lane reserved for carpools, buses, motorcycles, or low-emission vehicles with a DMV-issued decal; marked with a diamond symbol.
Center Left Turn Lane
A lane in the middle of a two-way street marked by an inner broken line and outer solid line, used for left turns or U-turns, with a driving limit of 200feet.
Turnout Areas or Lanes
Special areas on two-lane roads to allow cars behind to pass; must be used if you are driving slowly with 5 or more vehicles following you where passing is unsafe.
Bicycle Lane
Lanes for bicyclists only that run alongside vehicle traffic, typically marked by a single solid white line.
Buffered Bike Lane
Uses chevrons or diagonal markings to provide greater separation between bicyclists and vehicle traffic or on-street parking.
Bike Route
Designates a preferred route for bicyclists on streets shared with vehicle traffic using signs and shared road markings.
Bicycle Boulevard
Prioritizes bicycle travel on streets shared with vehicle traffic.
Separated Bikeway
A lane for exclusive use of bicyclists that is physically separated from motor vehicle traffic (e.g., by flexible posts or barriers); also known as a cycle track or protected bike lane.
Shared Roadway Bicycle Markings
Markings that alert drivers that bicyclists can occupy the lane and help bicyclists maintain a safe lane position.
