Epicureanism
Ataraxia (peace of mind), elimination of physical, emotional, and mental pain. The design of the universe is random without any purpose or design. Gods are perfectly at peace because they have no pain. Suggests withdrawal from public life to avoid pain and discomfort, which directly counters Roman ideals of civic duty
Stoicism
being happy by being like God, facing life’s challenges and with resilience and virtue. It is a philosophy that teaches the development of self-control and fortitude as a means to overcome destructive emotions. Stoics believe in accepting the moment as it presents itself and maintaining a will aligned with nature.
Carolingian Renaissance
during the dark ages, a period of cultural revival under Charlemagne, marked by advancements in art, literature, and learning. Focus on legal, educational, and political reform; promotion in learning and culture. It didn’t last long after Charlemagne’s death and Western Europe became fragmented again
West Roman Empire
Fell to the Germanic tribes in the 400s AD. Reconquered my Charlemagne but then divided up again. Not a lot of culture going on. The capital of Rome at this point was Ravenna. It was the western half of the Roman Empire that eventually succumbed to barbarian invasions and internal decay, leading to the establishment of various Germanic kingdoms.
East Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire)
The continuation of the Roman Empire in the eastern provinces during the Middle Ages, known for its rich culture, Orthodox Christianity, and strong centralized government. It preserved Roman law and Greek culture, thriving until its fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. Roman capital was Constantinople.

The Braggart Soldier
by Plautus about an arrogant soldier tricked by his slave and others into giving up a kidnapped woman he wrongly believes loves him. In the end, he is humiliated and beaten, and the lovers are reunited. Adapted from Greek Comedy but has Roman elements like slapstick and ridiculous names
