What was the reason for education during colonial times and how was it done?

Education was brought during the colonial times to teach people about religion, how to read and write, teach them about manners, values, and social graces (parents and family). The school revolved around the Bible.

How did the preparation and requirements for teaching change over the years?

In order to be a teacher when teaching first started there was no formal prep, you only need some type of elementary education and possibly a little bit of secondary education. Nowadays you must have a high school diploma, after completing both elementary and high school, and a four-year college degree

What are some of the schools norms that were established over 250 years ago at the local and state level that are still in play today?

The school calendar has stayed the same, we have summers off, taxes used to fund public schools, and school start times stayed pretty consistent (highs school goes in earliest, then middle school and then elementary school)

Boas wanted to create open climate in schools, recognized for defending minority groups, worked with teachers to create lesson plans on race, created pamphlets, radio shows, lectures, rallies, and public releases calling out racial issues in New York public school system.

Native Americans were forced to conform to white Christian views, practices and beliefs; they were forced to attend boarding schools where they were taught Christian belfies and language, and they were forced to give up their land, language, history, culture and way of life to conform to the new settlers

Some challenges minorities have faced through education are lack of funds, lack of supplies, lack of staff because they are not able o pay them all , health issues (don’t have any access to healthcare), no clean facilities. Bc of all these issues students struggle to get a good education so then they struggle to get good jobs bc they are behind in their education and speech, reading and basic skills.

Brown V Board of Education was a major ruling for education in the US… what changes came about because of it and what still has not changed?

It desegregated schools, which then led to the end of legal segregation in public spaces, and separate is not equal.

What is culturally responsive teaching?

Culturally responsive teaching is using students customs, characteristics and experiences as tools in the classroom. for example, making sure you talk about each holiday so all the students feel important and apart of the class discussion.
