atmosphere
a mixture of gases that surrounds Earth. Contains 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.039% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases, including water vapor
altitude
height above sea level or the earth's surface
troposphere
The lowest layer of the atmosphere and contains weather. Temperature decreases with higher altitude.
stratosphere
the layer of the atmosphere that is above the troposphere. Temperature increases with higher altitude.
ozone
a form of oxygen gas inside the stratosphere, absorbs ultraviolet rays from the sun
mesosphere
the layer of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and thermosphere. Temperature decreases with higher altitude.
thermosphere
Upper most layer of Earth's atmosphere; has two layers ionosphere and exosphere. Temperature increases with altitude.
Ionosphere
the lower part of the thermosphere, where electrically charged particles called ions are found
Exosphere
The outer layer of the thermosphere, extending outward into space.
greenhouse effect
earth's atmosphere traps solar radiation, caused by the presence in the atmosphere of gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane.
air pressure
the pressure caused by the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area
weather
The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place.
water vapor
water in the form of a gas
barometer
An instrument that measures atmospheric pressure
