What is the Multi-disciplinary team?

The multi-disciplinary team is a team of healthcare professionals, that work together along with patient sometimes in regards to agreeing on to a management plan based on their diagnosis.

Adv:

  • Patients are more confident since their care is handled by multiple clinicians

  • Improved communication within the team, as each team member adds in their knowledge, and this allows to boost moral.

  • Improved autonomy of the patient, where the patient fully understands the implications of their illness and they are able to make a decision based on understanding.

Dis adv:

  • The meetings could be time-consuming, with the additional long waiting times, this could be longer.

  1. The possibility of this occurring should be recognised, and clearly communicated. And decisions should align the patient’s best interests

  2. Sensitive information, should be discussed between the patient and the healthcare professional, while involving the individuals close to the patient.

  3. They dying person and the people involved should have a say in decisions regarding treatment.

  4. The needs of the family and patient are fully explored.
