Central Nervous System (CNS)
The part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The part of the nervous system that includes all nerves branching out from the CNS to the rest of the body.
Reflex Arc
A quick, unconscious reaction initiated by the spinal cord, such as pulling away from something hot.
Neurons
Specialized cells that transmit electrical and chemical signals in the nervous system.
Synapses
The tiny gaps where neurons communicate with each other.
Somatic Nervous System
The part of the peripheral nervous system responsible for voluntary movements.
Autonomic Nervous System
The part of the peripheral nervous system that controls involuntary functions such as heartbeat and digestion.
Neural Pathways
Connections that form in the brain during learning, strengthened through repeated activity.
