Theory of Architecture

Point
A primary element of form that indicates a position in space, serving as a focus, center of a field, or intersection of lines.
Line

Plane
A line extended with length, width, shape, surface, orientation, and position, serving to define the boundaries of a volume.
Volume
A plane extended with length, width, and depth, existing either as a solid (space displaced by mass) or a void (space enclosed by planes).
Spatial Tension
An additive transformation relationship relying on the close proximity of forms or their sharing of a common visual trait.
Edge-to-edge Contact
An additive relationship where forms share a common edge and can pivot about that edge.
Face-to-face Contact
An additive relationship requiring two forms to have corresponding parallel planar surfaces.
Interlocking Volumes
An additive relationship where forms interpenetrate each other's space without requiring shared visual traits.
Centralized Form
An additive formal organization consisting of secondary forms clustered about a dominant central parent-form.
Articulation
The manner in which the surfaces of a form come together to define its overall shape and volume.
Axis
An ordering principle defined by a line established by two points in space, about which forms and spaces can be arranged in a symmetrical or balanced manner.
Bilateral Symmetry
The balanced arrangement of similar elements on opposite sides of a median axis so that only one plane divides the whole into identical halves.
Radial Symmetry
The balanced arrangement of radiating elements such that the composition can be divided into identical halves by passing a plane at any angle around a central point or axis.
Hierarchy
The articulation of the importance or significance of a form or space by its size, shape, or placement relative to other forms and spaces.
Datum
A line, plane, or volume that, by its continuity and regularity, serves to gather, measure, and organize a pattern of forms and space.
Transformation
The principle that an architectural concept, structure, or organization can be altered through discrete manipulations without losing its identity or concept.
Proportion
An ordered set of mathematical relationships among the dimensions of a form or space, relating to the equality of ratios.
Golden Section
A mathematical proportioning system where a rectangle's side lengths form a ratio of approximately 1:1.618.
Intercolumniation
The system of spacing between columns based on the diameter of the column.
Ken
A traditional Japanese architectural module based on the standard Tatami floor mat (910mm×1820mm) used to order structure, materials, and space.
Silver Rectangle
A rectangle where the ratio between the two sides is 1:1.414 (or 1:2), frequently referred to as the A-ratio.
Anthropometry
The measurement of the size and proportions of the human body and how they affect human interactions with designed objects and spaces.

Proxemics
The study of the spatial separation individuals naturally maintain in social situations and how it relates to environmental and cultural factors.
