  • Kerensky sent loyal troops to close bolshevik newspapers, restrcit the power of the MRC and raise the bridges linking the working class-districts to the centre of the city

  • units of the red guard, sailors and petrograd garrison soldiers, about 5000 men in total were sent out to seize key points in the city

  • lenin remained in hiding until darkness fell and then travelled to the smolny to link up with trotstky

25th october

  • petrograd began as normal

  • kerensky, dosing himself on brandy and morphine, sought loyal troops to help him deal with the bolshevik threat but finding none, he left for the front, had to borrow a car from the amrican embassy to escape, disguised as a nurse

  • red guards and sailors surrounded the winter palace

  • red guards were easily able to enter the building whilst many ministers left by the back door

  • just before midnight the bolsheviks arrested the remaining members of the provisional govt who offered no resistance
