Collocation
A natural combination or group of words that are closely associated with each other in English.
Compound
Units of meaning formed with two or more words whose meaning can usually be guessed by knowing the individual words.
Idiom
A group of words in a fixed order with a meaning that cannot be guessed by knowing the meaning of the individual words.
Pass the buck
To pass responsibility for a problem to another person to avoid dealing with it oneself.
Driving rain
Rain that is falling fast and heavily.
Crisp snow
Snow that is fresh and hard.
Torrential rain
Extremely heavy rain.
Aisle seat
A seat next to the passage or aisle in an aircraft.
Breathtaking scenery
Extremely striking and beautiful views of the landscape.
Sprawling city
A city that is spread over a large area.
Snap decision
A quick decision made without long consideration.
Brutally honest
Honest in a way that may hurt others' feelings.
Nuclear family
A family unit consisting only of parents and children.
Extended family
A wider family network including grandparents, cousins, and other relatives.
Confirmed bachelor
A man who seems to have no intention of ever marrying.
Casual acquaintance
Someone you know a little, rather than a close friend.
Plagiarism
Using another person's idea or part of their work and pretending that it is your own.
Continuous assessment
A system where the quality of a student's work is judged by pieces of coursework rather than one final examination.
Widespread
Existing or happening in many places or among many people.
