Position Description
Also called a job description, it defines the requirements of a particular job.
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
The basic federal wage and hour law governing overtime pay.
Exempt Employee
A salaried employee exempted from FLSA overtime provisions.
Nonexempt Employee
An hourly employee eligible for overtime pay under the FLSA.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Federal law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment.
Summary Statement
The opening statement that condenses the responsibilities of a position; also known as a position summary, umbrella statement, position purpose or goal, mission statement, or function statement.
Level 1 Authority
Unlimited authority where an employee acts without consulting superiors.
Level 2 Authority
Authority with some limits, where an employee acts and then informs their manager afterward.
Level 3 Authority
Authority level where approval is required before taking action.
Working Conditions
Aspects of the work environment including physical space, temperature variations, ambient noise, and exposure to infectious agents, chemicals, radiation, and other hazards.
Compliance Standards
Performance standards concerning adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
Temperament & Interrelationship Standards
Performance standards pertaining to work habits, initiative, creativity, self-development, reliability, and communication skills.
Task Standards
Performance standards based on outcomes and results, such as quality and punctuality.
