Atom

Smallest unit of matter that retains its chemical identity

Molecule

More than 1 atom chemically combined

• in diagram shapes touching

Homogenous mixture

evenly mixed together. every sample should be the same. ex. lemonade, milk

heterogenous mixture

contains different section or phases. samples may not be identical. ex. chocolate chip cookie, salad, soil & rock.

intrinsic property

a property that is true of that type of matter and does not depend on the amount. ex. density, color, smell, melting point

extrinsic property

a property that depends on a thing’s relationship with other things or on external factors ex. weight, distance

pure substance

element: 1 type of atom is present

compound: more than 1 type of atom

mixtures

• more than 1 pure substance is physically combined

• hetero/homogenous

• can be separated by physical means

• PHYSICAL changes do not alter chemical bonds

• chemical changes alter how atoms are chemically bonded
