Psychoanalysis

ID
The part of the mind that contains sexual drives and instinctual energy, operating on the pleasure principle.
EGO
The rational part of the mind that mediates between the demands of the ID and the constraints of reality, operating on the reality principle.
SUPEREGO
The moral component of the personality that incorporates societal standards and conscience.
Intrapsychic conflicts
Conflicts that arise within the mind, particularly between the ID and superego.
Conscious
The level of awareness that contains thoughts and memories we are actively aware of.
Preconscious
The level of awareness that holds information that can be accessed when needed.
Unconscious
The level of awareness that contains hidden memories, drives, and thoughts that are difficult to access.
Denial
A defense mechanism that involves ignoring unpleasant thoughts or aspects of reality.
Repression
A defense mechanism where disturbing thoughts and memories are pushed out of conscious awareness.
Rationalization
A defense mechanism that justifies negative instinctual drives with logical reasons.
Oral stage
The first psychosexual stage (0-2 years) where gratification is achieved through oral activities.
Anal stage
The second psychosexual stage (2-3 years) where the child learns control over bowel and bladder movements.
Phallic stage
The third psychosexual stage (3-7 years) where the child recognizes gender differences and develops an awareness of sexuality.
