Describe the condensation reaction in the citric acid cycle, specifying the number of carbons in the molecules involved.

During step 1, the acetyl group of acetyl-CoA (a 2-carbon unit) condenses with oxaloacetate (a 4-carbon molecule) to form a new carbon-carbon bond. This first produces an intermediate called citryl-CoA (still attached to Coenzyme A).
Citryl-CoA is then hydrolyzed, releasing free CoA-SH and yielding citrate, a 6-carbon molecule
