Habituation
A decrease in response to a stimulus after repeated exposure.
Sensitization
An increase in response to a stimulus after exposure to a strong or noxious stimulus.
Gill Withdrawal Reflex
A reflex in Aplysia involving retraction of the gill when the siphon is touched.
Long Term Potentiation (LTP)
A long-lasting strengthening of synapses based on recent patterns of activity.
NMDA receptors
Glutamate receptors that play a key role in synaptic plasticity and memory function.
Anterograde Amnesia
The inability to form new memories following an event.
Retrograde Amnesia
The loss of pre-existing memories prior to an event.
Papez's Circuit
A neural circuit involved in the control of emotional expression and memory.
Korsakoff's Syndrome
A condition caused by thiamine deficiency, leading to memory issues and confabulation.
Prefrontal Cortex
The area of the brain responsible for higher cognitive functions and short-term memory.
Cerebellum
A brain structure involved in motor control and, potentially, procedural memory.
Amygdala
A brain region linked to emotion processing and memory, particularly stress-related memories.
