Abnormal Behavior
Behavior that is deviant, maladaptive, or personally distressful over a relatively long period of time.
Deviant Behavior
Behavior that does not conform to accepted social standards.
Maladaptive Behavior
Behavior that interferes with a person's ability to function effectively in society.
Personal Distress
An individual is troubled over a long period of time by their behavior.
Biological Approach
Views the causes of psychological disorders as organic and internal, focusing on the brain, genetic factors, and neurotransmitter functioning.
Medical Model
Defines psychological disorders as medical diseases with a biological origin.
Psychological Approach
Emphasizes contributions of experiences, thoughts, emotions, and personality characteristics to explain psychological disorders.
Sociocultural Approach
Looks at the larger social contexts in which a person lives, including cultural norms.
Biopsychosocial Model
Considers biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors as important in normal and abnormal behaviors.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
A disorder characterized by persistent anxiety for at least 6 months without a specified reason.
Panic Disorder
Characterized by recurring sudden onsets of intense terror without warning and no specific cause.
Specific Phobia
Irrational, overwhelming, persistent fear of a particular object or situation.
Social Anxiety Disorder
An intense fear of being humiliated or embarrassed in social situations.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Involves anxiety-provoking thoughts that will not go away and/or urges to perform repetitive behaviors.
Dissociative Disorders
Involve individuals losing their memory or change in identity.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
Involves a major depressive episode characterized by lethargy and hopelessness for at least 2 weeks.
Bipolar Disorder
Characterized by extreme mood swings with at least one or more episodes of mania.
Schizophrenia
A disorder characterized by highly disordered thought processes and can include symptoms like hallucinations and delusions.
Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)
Characterized by guiltlessness, lawbreaking, exploitation of others, irresponsibility, and deceit.
Suicide
The 12th leading cause of death in the United States; linked to psychological disorders.
Agoraphobia
Fear of being alone or in public places where escape might be difficult.
