The Spanish were unduly anxious about the possibility of an uprising by the Filipinos, so they outlawed all forms of Kali including bladed weapons.

The name Kali was totally supplanted by Arnis (or Eskrima), derivative of the phrase arnis.
1898
The Katipunero brandishing the itak or bolo has since become the symbol of the brave fight against Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. Dr. Jose P. Rizal reveals in his memories that he taught Arnis to the children of Dapitan.

In 1898 the arrival of the Americans also had an impact on the development of FMA. American soldiers stationed in the Philippines would train in FMA and bring it back to the United States.

Some public and private school instructors in Arnis were instructed by Mr. Remy A. Presas. He called his style as “Modern Arnis”.
2006
The games were held at Naga City, Bicol, with nine of the seventeen regions of the Philippines participating.

The government of the Philippines declared arnis to be the martial art and national sport of the Philippines.
