What are the five main uses of nanoparticles?
Catalysts, nanomedicine, computing, antibacterials and cosmetics.
Why are nanoparticles good catalysts?
They have a huge surface area to volume ratio so they could help make new catalysts.
Why are nanoparticles useful for medicine?
They are absorbed more easily by the body than most particles, so they could be used to deliver drugs right into the cells where they’re needed.
Why are nanoparticles useful in computing?
Some nanoparticles conduct electricity so they can be used in tiny electric circuits for computer chips.
Why are nanoparticles useful in antibacterials?
Silver nanoparticles have antibacterial properties; they can be added to polymer fibres that are then used to make surgical masks and wound dressings and can also be added to deodorants.
Why are nanoparticles useful in cosmetics?
They can be useful to improve moisturisers without making them too oily.
Why are there some concerns about the safety of nanoparticles?
They haven’t been round long so we don’t know the long term effects of them in the body and on the environment.
