Slope
The component of a line equation that determines whether lines are perpendicular or parallel.
y-intercept
The point where a line touches or crosses the y-axis, which can be read off directly as the constant number part when the equation is in slope-intercept form.
x-intercept
The point where a line touches or crosses the x-axis, which always requires substitution and algebra to calculate.
Slope-Intercept Form
The required form of a linear equation used to correctly identify and compare slopes.
Step 1 in Finding a Perpendicular Line Equation
Figure out the original slope, which usually requires rewriting the given equation into slope-intercept form.
Step 2 in Finding a Perpendicular Line Equation
Determine the new slope by taking the flip (reciprocal) of the original slope.
Step 3 in Finding a Perpendicular Line Equation
Use the new slope and the point given in the problem to find the new linear equation.
Interval Notation
A mathematical notation using brackets and parentheses that allows writing a list of numbers while leaving out specific excluded values.
Breaking Points
The specific places or inputs where a function breaks, which must be found and removed from the base domain.
Complex Numbers
A system of numbers that students are not allowed to use or acknowledge in this course, except during one specific week five weeks into the term.
