What are the properties of ionic compounds?
high melting and boiling points- lots of energy is needed
cannot conduct electricity when solid- charges cannot flow as ions are in a fixed place
can conduct electricity when liquid- melted, dissolved in water- ions in the lattice are free to move- charge can flow
What are intramolecular bonds?
strong covalent bonds found within small molecules
What are intermolecular bonds?
weak forces found between small molecules
What are polymers?
large, chain- like molecules held together by
strong covalent bonds between atoms in molecules
weak intermolecular forces between molecules
often solid at room temp
many melt easily
What are the properties of pure metals?
high melting and boiling points- strong electrostatic forces between metal ions and delocalised electrons
soft and malleable- ions are arranged in layers and slide over each other easily when a force is applied
