Ergosterol
A critical support molecule in the plasma membrane for Fungi. Similar to cholesterol as it is a a lipid that maintains the structural integrity of the cell membrane of fungal cells
Polyenes
Class of fungicides that bind to ergosterol
Amphotericin B
A polyene that binds to ergosterol and drills a hole through it, creates holes in the plasma membrane where vital chemicals leak out. Humans are somewhat susceptible to this as cholesterol is similar to ergosterol causing some polyenes to attach and disrupt the plasma membrane
Azoles and Allylamines
Inhibit the cells ability to make ergosterol resulting in the membrane to not remain in tact and cellular death. Humans are not susceptible to this as our cells do not have the chemical pathway to synthesize ergosterol
