Why do the migration trends change over time?
It depends on the mix of the push-pull factors in both the external and local conditions
E.g. The spike of Chinese migrants in the early 1900 was due to Southern China’s worsening conditions – i.e. Tangshan Earthquake and increased political instability
This contrasted against the developments in the region which were more stable
