New cards

What is predatation?

The relationship between two organisms where one organism prays on the other.

2
New cards

What is the boom and bust cycle?

The predator and the prey populations are directly influenced by one another.

3
New cards

What is Symbiosis and its three types?

A close, permanent relationship between organisms.

Commensalism: feeding relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected

Mutualism: Both organisms benefit from the relationship

Parasitism: One organism benefits and the other is harmed.

4
New cards

What is a keystone species and what do they do?

A species that has an important role in the ecosystem, and they help maintain the number of individuals in a population and the overall diversity of that ecosystem.

5
New cards

What can the removal of a keystone species do?

Can lead to the disappearance of other species, and decreases bio diversity.

6
New cards

What are group behaviors and their purpose?

Interactions among individuals of the same species that usually benefit one or more individuals in the group. Group behavior often helps one or more members of the group to survive better.

7
New cards

What is size and what are the three key components of it?

Size is the number of individuals in a population, and the size of the population is influenced by the birth and death rate of the population

birth-death>0= increasing

birth-death=0 stays same

b-d<0= decreasing

8
New cards

What is density, and its two factors?

The number of individuals in a population divided by the size of land.the

Density-dependent factors: Factors in the environment that increase as the population size increases. Birth rates fall and death rates rise with increasing population density.

Density independent: factors in the environment that affect population regardless of the size of the population, and birth rate and death rate do not change with population density.

9
New cards

What is dispersion and its three parts?

Dispersion is how individuals in a population are spread out

Uniform: Individuals are spaced evenly

Random: individuals are distributed randomly without a predictable pattern

Clumped: Individuals are clustered in groups.

10
New cards

What are r and k strategists?

R: Short life span, small body sized, reproduce quickly, have a lot of offspring at once, very little paternal care provided.

K: long life span, large body size, reproduce slowly, have few offspring at once, parental care provided.

11
New cards

What is the difference between exponential and logistic growth.

Exponential growth is when a population has lots of resources and grows quickly. Logistic growth is when the population starts to reach its carrying capacity, and the population flattens out.

12
New cards

What is carrying capacity?

THe maximum population size that can be supported by the amount of resources available. Environmental resources determine how many organisms can live.
