What is “Webmail”?
The DIRECT AND SPECIFIC web interface for an email domain.
What is “Mail Client”?
Anything outside of the DIRECT AND SPECIFIC web interface for that domain that is used for email operation.
What are the incoming mail servers?
POP
IMAP
What is the outgoing mail server?
SMTP
What are “Server Settings”?
Directions for mail clients to access/operate email accounts.
What are “Error Messages”?
Tells us WHY something isn’t operating properly.
What are “Email Headers”?
Tells us the PATH the email took from Point A to Point B.

Mail Clients
What is “POP3”?
Stands for “Post Office Protocol 3”
Only downloads the email to your device from the mail server.
Only downloads what is in your inbox folder.
Does not synchronize the folders
Email is deleted from mail server once it is downloaded to a device.
Internet connection only needed when sending or receiving email.
Saves storage space on the mail server.
Needs a backup plan for your email in case your device crashes or is lost.
Your device is more vulnerable to viruses since the emails are fully downloaded.
What is “IMAP”?
Stand for “Internet Message Access Protocol”
Allows you to you your email, that’s on the server, from multiple devices.
All email is kept on the server
Caches local copies of the email onto all of your devices.
Synchronizes all of your folders and everything that is in them.
You will be able to see all your email across devices.
You will not be able to view your emails without an internet connection.
What is “SMTP”?
Stands for “Simple Mail Transfer Protocol”.
Protocol used for sending emails.
A set of commands that authenticates and directs the transfer of email.
SMTP.. Sends Mail To People
Uses the TCP protocol
Settings configured in email client
What is an “SMTP Server”?
The server that your email travels to using the SMTP protocol. It sends the email to the receipient’s email server.
What is “TCP”?
Stands for “Transmission Control Protocol”
A connection-oriented protocol
Guarantees email delivery ( Assuming the destination address is correct and still exist)
Gives you a mail delivery error if for some reason your email couldn’t be sent
What is a “Host”? (Referring to emails)
Describes who has the physical servers and operates them.
If NRTC host the servers then we say that the member is hosted.
If the member or a third party host the servers then we say the the member is non-hosted.
How is Hosted troubleshooting different from Non-Hosted troubleshooting?
