What is pickle and what is it used for?
Pickle solutions are usually a diluted sulfric and nitric acid or solutions of sodium bisulfate. Used to clean metal.
Why do we use citric acid in this studio?

If you get pickle on your skin, what can you use to neutralize the pickle and stop it from burning or irritating your skin?
Flush skin with water and sprinkle baking soda on top.
What should you do if you get pickle in your eye?
Flush eyes at eye wash station or sink for 15 minutes.
Why is it required to always have someone else in the studio while I am working?
In case a dangerous or hazardous situation occurs.
Why is it required that you wear closed toe shoes when using the Metals Studio?
To protect feet from heavy falling, sharp and or hot metal objects

Why is it important to have local slot ventilation when soldering?
So that the fumes are pulled away from my breathing space.
Why do we not allow the use of low temperature or “lead” solders in the IU Metals Studio?
Lead solder can eat holes in non-ferrous metals when heated to annealing or silver soldering temperatures.

What solvents are safe to use?
There’s no such thing as a “safe” solvent.

Skin irritation, eye irritation, reproduction hazard and fire hazard.
How can you protect yourself and others from hazardous exposure to solvents?
Try to find replacements for solvent-containing products and use the least toxic one.
What are the four most important rules to remember when using all power equipment?
Wear facial protection, don’t wear loose clothing or jewelry, tie back long hair and pay attention to what you’re doing in relation to equipment.
What is the main cause of accidents when using power equipment?
Lack of attention and carelessness.

Use brass or steel shot tumbler, never the buffing machine.
When can you work in the studio and what are the studio hours?

One of the most common colorants of metals is liver of sulfur (potassium sulfide). When applied to metals, this compound will darken the surface of metal. Is it toxic to breathe liver of sulfur?
