Mechanical Work
The energy transferred to or from an object via the application of force along a displacement.
Work Equation
W = F x d, where F = ma.
Kinetic Energy
The energy an object possesses as a result of its motion, calculated as Ek = ½ mv².
Concentric Contraction
A type of muscle contraction that results in positive work.
Isometric Contraction
A type of muscle contraction where there is no net work done.
Eccentric Contraction
A type of muscle contraction that results in negative work.
Net Work
The total work done by an athlete during an exercise.
Power
The rate at which work is done, measured in Watts (J/s) or kpm/min.
Efficiency
The percentage of energy expenditure devoted to mechanical work.
Economy
The physiological cost of doing a fixed amount of work.
Conservation of Energy
The principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
Potential Energy
The stored energy of an object due to its position or state.
Displacement
The vector quantity that refers to the change in position of an object.
Inertia
The resistance of an object to any change in its state of motion.
Momentum
The quantity of motion an object has, calculated as p = mv.
Force
An interaction that causes an object to accelerate, measured in Newtons (N).
