Ramus
An armlike projection on a bone.
Sinus
An air-filled cavity within a bone.
Tubercle
A small rounded projection on a bone.
Meatus
A canal-like structure in a bone.
Foramen
An opening through a bone.
Fossa
A shallow depression in a bone.
Spine
A sharp, slender process on a bone.
Diaphysis
The shaft of a long bone.
Epiphysis
The proximal or distal end of a long bone.
Spongy bone
The porous type of bone tissue indicated in the diagram.
Epiphyseal line
The structure in adults that the epiphyseal plate becomes after bone growth stops.
Medullary cavity
The internal cavity of the bone shaft where fat is stored.
Periosteum
The fibrous outer covering of the bone.
Yellow bone marrow
The substance stored in the medullary cavity; it is NOT the site of red blood cell production.
Central canal
A canal in an osteon that contains nerve, vein, and artery.
Femur
An example of a long bone.
Perforating canals
Canals that run at right angles to the bone shaft and central canals.
Canaliculi
Extremely small canals that connect lacunae.
Lacuna
A small chamber or space that contains an osteocyte inside.
Lamella
Concentric rings or layers of bone matrix.
