Bioenergetics
The study of chemical pathways that convert substrates to energy within biological organisms.
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate; the body's energy currency.
Metabolism
The process by which your body converts food and drink into energy for you to live and function.
Substrate-level phosphorylation
A method of forming ATP by directly transferring a phosphate group to ADP from another molecule.
Anaerobic Energy Systems
Energy systems that produce energy without the need for oxygen.
Glycolysis
The breakdown of glucose to produce energy.
Krebs Cycle
A cycle that processes Acetyl-CoA to produce NADH and FADH2, which are used in the electron transport chain.
Electron Transport Chain (ETC)
A series of protein complexes in the mitochondrial membrane that drive oxidative phosphorylation to produce ATP.
Rate-limiting enzyme
An enzyme that regulates the speed of a metabolic pathway, and its activity is influenced by the concentration of substrates and products.
Free Energy
The portion of energy in a system available for work, such as muscle contraction.
