Solution Set of an Inequality
All values that make the inequality true.
Closed Circle
A symbol on a number line graph indicating that the endpoint value is included in the solution set.
Parentheses ( )
Symbols used in interval notation to indicate that both endpoints are excluded from the solution set.
Critical Values
The zeros of a related quadratic equation that divide the number line into test intervals.
Dashed Parabola
The boundary curve used when graphing a strict quadratic inequality in two variables, showing that points on the curve are excluded.
Quartiles
Measures of position that divide an ordered data set into four equal parts.
75th Percentile (P75)
A measure of position describing a value with about 75% of the data at or below it.
Fourth Decile (D4)
A measure of position that is equivalent to the 40th percentile (P40).
Second Quartile (Q2)
The measure of position that is equal to the median of an ordered data set.
Seventh Decile (D7)
A measure of position that is equivalent to the 70th percentile (P70).
Interquartile Range (IQR)
The difference between the third quartile (Q3) and the first quartile (Q1).
1.5(IQR) Rule
A rule used to identify outliers by determining if a value lies beyond 1.5×IQR above the third quartile (Q3) or below the first quartile (Q1).
