Organization (Biology Theme)
One of the five unifying themes in biology; the arrangement and interrelationship of parts from molecules to the biosphere.
Information (Biology Theme)
A unifying theme focusing on genetic and molecular data that guide development, function, and reproduction.
Energy and Matter (Biology Theme)
A unifying theme describing the flow and transformation of energy and matter through living systems.
Interactions (Biology Theme)
A unifying theme about how components within and between systems affect each other and function.
Evolution (Biology Theme)
A unifying theme that explains unity and diversity of life through descent with modification and natural selection.
Characteristics of Life
Eight shared properties of living things (cells, reproduction, organization, energy use, response, homeostasis, genetic material, evolution); viruses are not alive.
Viruses are not alive
Viruses lack certain life processes and require a host to replicate; therefore they are not considered living organisms.
Cell Theory
All living organisms are made of cells; the cell is the basic unit of life; all cells come from preexisting cells.
Prokaryotic
Cells that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; include Bacteria and Archaea.
Eukaryotic
Cells with a membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
Nucleus
A membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells that houses DNA.
Organelles
Membrane-bound structures within cells that perform specific functions.
Chromosome
A long DNA molecule containing hundreds or thousands of genes.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
Genetic material of life; two long chains in a double helix built from nucleotides A, G, C, T.
Gene
The basic unit of inheritance; encodes information for building cellular molecules and guiding development.
Gene expression
Process by which a gene’s sequence is used to make a functional product (RNA or protein).
Transcription
DNA sequence is copied into RNA.
Translation
RNA sequence is used to synthesize a protein.
Nucleotides (A, G, C, T)
The four building blocks that make up DNA.
Double helix
The structure of DNA, two long strands wound around each other.
Genome
The entire set of genetic material present in an organism or cell.
Genomics
Study of whole sets of genes in one or more species.
Proteome
The entire set of proteins expressed by a given cell, tissue, or organ.
Proteomics
Study of the structure, function, and interactions of the proteome.
High-throughput technology
Techniques that generate large amounts of data quickly for biological analysis.
Bioinformatics
Use of computational tools to process and analyze large biological data sets.
Emergent properties
New properties that arise from the arrangement and interaction of parts as complexity increases.
Systems biology
An approach that studies interactions within biological systems to understand emergent properties.
Reductionism
An approach that explains complex systems by reducing them to their simpler components.
Producers (Autotrophs)
Organisms that produce their own energy, usually via photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.
Consumers (Heterotrophs)
Organisms that obtain energy by eating other organisms.
Decomposers
Organisms that obtain energy by breaking down wastes and dead matter.
Energy flow
Movement of energy through an ecosystem from producers to consumers, with some energy lost as heat.
Matter cycling
Chemical elements are recycled within an ecosystem through processes like decomposition and recycling.
Ecosystem
A living community (biotic) and its physical (abiotic) environment in a particular area.
Biosphere
All of Earth's ecosystems and environments that support life.
Three domains
Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya—the broadest classification of life.
Bacteria
One of the two prokaryotic domains; common bacteria.
Archaea
One of the two prokaryotic domains; often extremophiles.
Eukarya
Domain comprising all eukaryotic organisms.
Protists
A diverse group of mostly single-celled eukaryotes; not easily classified with plants, animals, or fungi.
Unity in diversity
A theme noting DNA as the universal genetic language and commonalities in life's basic mechanisms despite diversity.
Descent with modification
Darwin’s idea that species arise from common ancestors with changes accumulating over time.
Natural selection
The process whereby the environment selects for beneficial traits, increasing their frequency.
Adaptation
A trait that improves an organism's fitness in its environment.
Fitness
An organism’s ability to survive and reproduce in its environment.
Darwin
Naturalist who proposed natural selection as the mechanism of evolution.
Hypothesis
An educated, testable explanation for an observation.
Theory
A well-supported, broad explanation that can generate testable hypotheses.
Prediction
A specific expected outcome that can be tested by experiments or observations.
Experiment
A controlled test designed to test a hypothesis or theory.
Observation
Careful noticing of natural phenomena that informs hypotheses.
Inductive reasoning
Deriving generalizations from a large set of specific observations.
Deductive reasoning
Reasoning from general principles to make specific predictions.
Peer review
Evaluation of scientific work by independent experts before publication.
Scientific method
A systematic process of observation, question, hypothesis, experiment, data analysis, and conclusions.
Independent variable
The variable deliberately changed or controlled by the experimenter.
Dependent variable
The variable measured in an experiment to assess the effect of the independent variable.
Negative control
A control group expected to show no effect, used to detect false positives.
Positive control
A control group expected to show a known effect, used to detect false negatives.
Control
A standard for comparison in an experiment; helps isolate the effect of the independent variable.
DNA to RNA to Protein
The central dogma: DNA is transcribed into RNA, which is translated into protein.
Protein folding
The process by which a linear amino-acid chain folds into its functional three-dimensional shape.
Chromosome
A DNA-containing structure that houses many genes in a cell.
Genome sequencing
Determining the order of nucleotides in an organism’s DNA to reveal its genetic information.
