Movement Competency
The ability to perform fundamental movements correctly, efficiently, safely, and confidently in different physical activities and everyday situations.
Physical Literacy
The capability enabled by movement competency that allows individuals to participate successfully in a variety of physical activities throughout their lives.
Skeletal System
The system made up of bones that provide support, shape, and protection for the body.
Joints
The places where two or more bones meet, connecting the bones and providing flexibility to allow movement.
Bones
Rigid structures that provide support and act as levers in the skeletal system.
Skeletal Muscles
Muscles that contract and pull on bones across joints to create movement.
Warming Up
An activity done before exercise that prepares the joints and muscles for physical activity.
Cooling Down
An activity done after exercise that helps the body recover and may reduce muscle stiffness.
Flexion
The movement that decreases the angle between two bones at a joint.
Lateral Flexion
The movement of bending the body to the side, decreasing the angle on one side.
Obliques
The side muscles involved in contracting during lateral flexion.
Horizontal Flexion
The movement that brings a body part forward across the horizontal plane, also called transverse flexion or cross-body movement.
Pectoralis Major
The primary muscle involved in performing horizontal flexion of the arm.
Dorsiflexion
The movement that brings the top of the foot upward toward the chin, decreasing the angle at the ankle joint.
