Chain Restaurant
A restaurant structure characterized by advantages such as recognition in the marketplace, greater advertising clout, sophisticated systems development, and discounted purchasing.
Independent Restaurant
A restaurant structure characterized by advantages such as being easy to open, the ability to 'do their own thing', a unique brand culture, and owner-driven customer engagement.
Franchised Restaurant
A restaurant structure that carries the least financial risk, is tested in the marketplace, and provides training along with marketing and management support.
Quick Service Restaurant (QSR)
A restaurant segment that drives the industry where food is paid for before service, offering limited menus, convenient locations, and good price and value.
Pop Up Restaurant
A dining concept that appears only for a few days, generally with an upfront ticket price, where chefs showcase their talents and attract followers before opening full time.
Food Truck
An evolved form of the traditional sidewalk food cart that is larger, tricked out, self-propelled, and offers elevated quality and variety.
Fast Casual Restaurant
A restaurant segment occupying a niche between quick service and casual dining, where guests order at the counter and seat themselves, featuring made-to-order menu items with high quality ingredients.
Bakery Cafe
A café that is also a bakery serving fresh baked goods, coffee, sandwiches, salads, and soups, where items are often produced centrally or baked off on-site.
Family Restaurant
An informal family-style restaurant either run by or appealing to families, offering a simple menu and service, with most locations not serving alcoholic beverages.
Casual Restaurant
An informal restaurant type that has gained popularity due to the societal trend toward a more relaxed lifestyle.
Fine Dining Restaurant
A restaurant segment offering expensive cuisine and leisurely service, typically featuring under 100 seats, proprietor or partner ownership, high wine profit margins, and highly trained chefs.
Hotel Restaurant
A top-notch specialty restaurant located within a hotel that serves as a plus amenity for guests, led by a highly paid chef trained at culinary school or prestigious restaurants.
Steakhouse
A specialty restaurant simplified by a limited menu catering to a well-defined market, characterized by high food costs, low labor costs, and recent influence from health awareness campaigns.
Seafood Restaurant
A specialty restaurant type, often independently owned and operated, where farm-bred fish and aquaculture are changing costs and item availability.
Ethnic Restaurant
A specialty restaurant offering an array of opportunities with familiar food based on home cooking, served in generous portions at reasonable prices.
Theme Restaurant
A specialty restaurant categorized by distinct concepts such as Movies, Sports, Historical Eras ('good old days'), Media, Travel, or Ecology.
Coffee Shop
A restaurant concept originally modeled after Italian bars and espresso tradition, offering signature blends, customer interaction, and a unique sense of place.
Chef Owned Restaurant
A restaurant managed by an experienced and highly motivated culinary professional who benefits from a good back-up person to handle costs, marketing, and numbers.

The style and theme of a restaurant that determines the required talents and aims to offer a reasonable Return on Investment.
