What is a social institution?
An enduring set of cultural patterns and social relationships organized to accomplish basic social tasks.
What constitutes a family?
A group of persons directly linked by kin connections, where adult members assume responsibility for caring for the young.
What are the types of social institutions?
Family, Economy, Polity, Religion, Education.
What is a nuclear family?
A family structure based on a two-generation household of parents and their children.
What is an extended family?
A family structure that includes several generations living in the same household, such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
What characterizes gay and lesbian families?
Households that do not contain adults of both sexes; may involve children cared for by same-sex couples.
List the functions of the family.
Reproduction, socialization, care/protection/emotional support, assignment of status, regulation of sexual behavior.
