Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites
Hotel opened in LA in 1976. An example of forced separation of people due to its cylindrical design, high off the ground, mirrored windows, and bridges connecting privatized buildings to the hotel.
Olivera Street (formerly El Pueblo)
Historical district located in LA settled in 1781 by 11 Mexican families. Today it is a living museum and an orientalist view of Mexican life in LA
“No one rides the bus in LA”
phrase said by mostly middle class white people due to the perception that people do not ride buses in LA. However, in 2016 276 million individuals rode the bus. Ride-share apps also led to the declining use of public transportation by some people.
Second Great Migration
WW2 legislation prevented discrimination in hiring practices in defense industry which led to a spike in migration of African Americans from the South to the North in the 40’s and 60’s leading to a spike in LA’s population
Zoot Suite Riots
June 1943 in LA where vigilante patrols racially targeted Latinx men for wearing zoot suits.
Watt’s Uprising
August 11-16, 1965 in LA riots in response to the murder of Marquette Frye, his brother, and mom. Also fueled by simmering anger and continuous systemic oppression by the LAPD. Fueled Ronald Reagan’s law + order presidency
Nation of Islam Mosque shooting
Police stormed this place and shot 19 people in LA. Goal was to purposefully target this place because it was a religious organization where Black men could feel empowered (the city was threatened by this power)
Rodney King Riots
A series of riots in LA occurring from April 29-May 4, 1992. These riots erupted after 4 policemen who had brutalized Rodney King were acquitted even though there was video footage.

Puvungna
sacred Tonga site located central on campus of Long Beach State University (in LA). It is considered to be where the ancestral god first came down and where ancestors interacted with him. Multiple attempts to bulldoze the site to build a strip mall.
Bunker Hill
full of LA residents in the 1950’s from reservations all over the Southwest. Dismantled in the 1960’s in order to put up a simulacrum (a statue?)
Creoles
catch all term used to describe descenders of mixed heritage…carries a lot of weight in New Orleans due to its unique cultural weight. In Louisiana, Black people had more opportunities compared to other southern states which enabled them to interact with white people
Homer Plessy
white passing, famous for Supreme Court case Homer v Plessy where he purposefully got arrested to draw attention to his cause
Marc Morial
Mayor of New Orleans from 1994-2002. Morial family were big players in the political scene for several generations
Second Lines
Black people took advantage of “brass band” French rules to loudly proclaim space amidst Jim Crow era legislation which restricted the movement of African Americans.
Inside Music
music that required classical training, exclusive in nature, and largely played by white and creole musicians
Outside music
music that is more accessible, does not require training, belongs to everybody, loud and parading, predominately played by Black people
Storyville
1891-1917 the city of New Orleans attempt to corral prostitution into one neighborhood
Hurricane Betsy
1965 hurricane that was used as an example that encouraged people to stay during Hurricane Katrina due to lack of trust in local law enforcement.
