Human Biology: 8.1. Digestive System of Human

Vocabulary terms covering the basic definitions of the human digestive system, the structure of the alimentary canal, and anatomy of the mouth and buccal cavity.

Digestion

The biological process by which food is broken down into simple, smaller and absorbable substances so the body can use them for energy, growth and repair.

Digestive organs

The organs taking part in digestion.

Digestive system

A group of digestive organs that are connected and work together to break down food, absorb nutrients and remove waste from the body.

Alimentary canal

A $6-9\,meter$ long, coiled and muscular tube extending from the mouth to the anus.

Mouth

A transverse apperature lying below the nose, externally covered by lips, through which food enters the buccal cavity.

Lips

Movable fleshy structures used for opening and closing the mouth, holding food and speaking.

Vestibule

A narrow, vertical, slit-like structure apperture surrounded by lips and cheeks externally and by gums and teeth internally.

Buccal cavity

A spacious chamber situated between the upper and lower Jaw.

Palate

The roof of the buccal cavity consisting of a bony palate anteriorly and a soft palate posteriorly.

Hard palate

The anterior part of the palate containing palatal ridges that help retain food during chewing.

Ovula

A small muscular fold hanging from the soft palate that prevents food from entering the nasal cavity during swallowing.

Tongue

The structure contained within the floor of the buccal cavity.
