Mean Arterial Pressure

• MAP is the average blood pressure in a person’s arteries during a single cardiac cycle (one heartbeat). It represents the steady pressure pushing blood through the body and is considered a much more accurate measure of organ health than standard systolic/diastolic blood pressure.

Central Venous Pressure

• CVP is the blood pressure measured in the thoracic vena cava, near the right atrium of the heart. It reflects the amount of blood returning to the heart and the ability of the heart to pump that blood back into the arterial system. In simple terms, it tells clinicians about a patient's fluid volume status (whether they are dehydrated, normal, or fluid-overloaded).

Ejection Fraction

• Ejection Fraction is a measurement, expressed as a percentage, of how much blood the left ventricle pumps out of the heart with each contraction. It measures heart pumping efficiency and serves as the primary indicator of overall cardiac function

• Clinicians perform an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) on the donor to calculate the EF and evaluate how well the heart walls are moving.

Potential of Hydrogen

• Blood pH is evaluated using an Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) test. It is one of the 9 core clinical parameters monitored to ensure organ stability.

PaO₂/FiO₂ Ratio

• PaO₂ (Partial Pressure of Oxygen): The actual amount of oxygen dissolved in the arterial blood, measured via an Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) test.

• FiO₂ (Fraction of Inspired Oxygen): The percentage of oxygen the ventilator is pumping into the lungs (ranging from 21% room air to 100% pure oxygen).

• NRP is an advanced, high-tech surgical procedure used during DCD (Donation after Circulatory Death) cases.

• Historically, when a patient died from circulatory arrest (rather than brain death), the organs went without oxygen-rich blood flow during the waiting period, causing rapid deterioration. NRP solves this by using a modified heart-lung machine (like ECMO) to restore warm, oxygenated blood flow exclusively to a localized region of the donor's body after death has been legally declared.
