Why do we have separate storm and waste sewers?

Some reasons that separate sewers are preferred are: flooding (storm sewers only deal with rainfall and waste sewers only deal with water from homes/buildings), public health (drinking water has no chance of being contaminated), and the environment (the wastewater wouldn’t be able to flow into streams or creeks)
