Apron
Equipment that shields the wearer's clothing and skin from chemical splashes and spills during an experiment.
Safety Goggles
Protective equipment that protects the eyes from chemicals and splashes.
Beaker
Used for mixing, stirring, and heating chemicals, but is not a precise instrument for measuring volume.
Beaker Tongs
Used to move beakers containing hot liquids.
Bunsen Burner
An apparatus that produces an open flame used for the heating of liquids and solids.
Buret
Dispenses known volumes of liquids, especially in an acid-base titration.
Buret Clamp
A device used to hold and secure a buret on a ring stand.
Clamp
Used to hold and secure an apparatus on a ring stand.
Clay Triangle
A support for crucibles when they are being heated over a Bunsen burner.
Cleaning Brush
Used for cleaning the inside of laboratory equipment.
Crucible and Cover
Used to heat solids, particularly metals, to a very high temperature.
Crucible Tongs
Used for handling hot crucibles and picking up other hot objects, but should not be used for picking up beakers.
Electronic Balance
Precisely measures the mass of an object using sensors and a digital display; chemicals should never be placed directly on it and require a weigh boat or paper.
Erlenmeyer Flask
A piece of glassware used for mixing, heating, and storing liquids, but not as an accurate measurement for volume.
Evaporating Dish
Separates liquids and solids in a solution through the process of evaporation.
Forceps
Also known as tweezers, these are used to pick up small objects.
Funnel
Used to channel liquids into containers with narrow openings to prevent spills and splashes; also used when filtering.
Glass Stirring Rod
A rod used to manually stir solutions.
Graduated Cylinder
Used to accurately measure the volume of liquids in milliliters (mL).
Hot Plate
Provides a controlled heat source to heat samples.
Iron Ring Clamp
Used to stabilize flasks and other glassware above the work surface.
Mortar and Pestle
Used to prepare solid substances by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder.
Ring Stand
A stand that holds or clamps laboratory glassware and other equipment in place.
Scoopula
A tool used to scoop up and transfer solids.
Test Tube
Holds small amounts of material for a reaction or for heating.
Test Tube Tongs
Used to hold a test tube, especially when heating it.
Test Tube Rack
Supports and stores test tubes during an experiment.
Thermometer
Used to precisely measure the temperature of substances.
Transfer Pipet
Used to transfer small amounts of liquid drop-wise.
Volumetric Flask
Contains or measures a very precise and accurate amount of liquid; typically used for preparing solutions of an exact concentration.
Wash Bottle
Dispenses distilled water for cleaning glassware and rinsing; should never be filled with tap water.
Watch Glass
Used for evaporation, holding small amounts of liquids or solids, or used to cover beakers.
Well Plate
A flat tray used to perform many small scale reactions at one time.
Wire Gauze
Supports glassware on top of the iron ring clamp while heating.
