What is repeated addition?
Adding the same number over and over
Example of repeated addition
55 + 55 + 55… (13 times) = 715
Why is repeated addition not ideal?
It takes a lot of time
What is the faster way to multiply?
Standard algorithm (stacked multiplication)
Example problem
55 × 13
Step 1: Multiply by the ones digit
3 × 5 = 15 → write 5, carry 1
Continue step 1
3 × 5 = 15 + 1 = 16 → full result = 165
Step 2: Multiply by the tens digit (1)
Add a placeholder zero
1 × 5 = 5 and 1 × 5 = 5
→ result = 550
Step 3: Add the results
165 + 550 = 715
Final answer of 55 × 13
715
Different ways to write multiplication
6 × 5, 6 * 5, 6(5)
