Self-concept
How a person thinks about themselves, including beliefs, values, and opinions.
Self-image
How a person views their unique qualities such as appearance and talents.
Self-esteem
How a person feels about themselves.
Ideal self
What a person desires to be.
Stress
How a body reacts to changes, whether physical, emotional, or psychological.
General Adaptive Syndrome (GAS)
A model describing the body's response to stress in order to maintain equilibrium.
Stages of General Adaptive Syndrome (GAS)
Alarm: Defensive mechanisms activate.
Resistance: Long-term stress adaptation.
Exhaustion: The body depletes resources.
Primary appraisal
The initial evaluation of a situation to determine its significance.
Secondary appraisal
An assessment of available resources to cope with a stressor.
Types of stress
Acute, chronic, and episodic acute stress.
Acute stress disorder (ASD)
A psychological condition that can occur after experiencing a traumatic event.
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
A mental health condition triggered by a traumatic event, characterized by severe anxiety and flashbacks.
Compartmentalization
Separating conflicting feelings and thoughts.
Denial
Refusing to accept reality or truth.
Projection
Attributing one's own unacceptable thoughts or feelings to someone else.
Rationalization
Justifying one's feelings or behaviors through plausible explanations.
Regression
Reverting to an earlier stage of development in response to stress.
Repression
Involuntarily forgetting painful experiences or memories.
Compassion fatigue
Emotional and physical strain from being exposed to the suffering of others.
Burnout
Prolonged stress leading to emotional exhaustion and decreased job performance.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
chronic gastrointestinal disorder that affects the large intestine, causing symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits
Crisis
Threatening situation triggered by an event where person has a strong response
