Hazardous dent waste
mercury and silver residue from amalgam
lead found in lead-foil packet and lead shield
silver found in x-ray fixer solution
chromium used in many x-ray cleaners
chemical waste such as formaldehyde, acetones, and ketone
safeguarding health and safety
adherence to bloodborne pathogens standard
adherence to hazardous communication standard
adherence to state, college, and department policies
also referred to as HAZMAT standards
agencies involved in compliance
OSHA- occupational and safety and health administration
CDC- center for disease control
EPA- environmental protection agency
FDA- food and drug administration
ADA- American dental association
RIDH- Ri department of health
DEM- department of environmental management
agency roles
OSHA- safeguard employee health
CDC- issue infection control guidelines
EPA- safeguard public environment
FDA- approve medical and dental materials and devices
ADA- Promote quality in the dental practice
RIDH- Safeguard public health in RI
DEM- safeguard public environment in RI
PPE
Must wear regulation uniform and lab coat
safety glasses with side shields
tinted safety glasses while using a curing light
mask that filters to the 5 micron lvl or below
mask must be changed for each new patient or when wet
non latex, non-powdered gloves must be worn
heavy nitrile glove worn when cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing
heavy nitrile worn when disposing hazardous material and lab cleanup
nitrile gloves must be autoclaved after each lab session and discarded at end of month
Handwashing
hand washed upon entering dent mat lab and before leaving lab
must wash hand before donning gloves and removing gloves
hand wash if glove integrity is compromised
hazard communication standard
inform employees of identity and hazard of chemical use
written program
identify by name all employees who are exposed to hazardous chemicals
describe how chemical are handled, and include description of safety measure
must describe how to respond to a chemical emergency
chemical inverntory
new sds must be included and added to sds files
SDS- safety data sheet
comprehensive information about chemical
manufacture must provide an SDS for every chemical shipped
Osha Pel and TLV
because harm can occur at different doses and in different time period
PEL- Permissible exposure limit - max amount of a chemical to which a person can legally be expose in a give time period
TLV= threshold limit value- it is the amount of the chemical you can get before you get damage from it
Osha and the Globally harmonized system
effort to establish a universal system of communicating information about chemicals and material used world wide
Labels
labels can vary but all product need
chemical name
code number
batch number
labels- signal words
danger- more serious (category 1)
Warning- less serious (category 2)
some many not warrant a word
Hazardous material outcome
poisonous, cancer causing, sensitive to skin, eye, and mucous membrane, flammable. reactive alone or w/ other chemical
chemical harm
acute exposure - expose to large amount in short time- symptoms appear quickly
Chronic exposure- exposed to small amount over time - symptoms require time to appear
chemical degradation
Occur from : heat, cold, light, storage beyond expected shelf life
Combat by: storing in cool, dry area, FIFO storage, Monitoring expiration date, purchasing reasonable amount
Chemical exposure
May occur from: Inhalation, ingestion, absorption through skin or across the mucous membrane
May enter body by: preferred route, or any several routes
May target: Specific body organ, Several body organ
Waste disposal method
Determined by type. 3 type of waste
Regulated- Biohazardous; Infectious material that would release blood if compressed.( blood soaked gauze, contaminated needle, extracted teeth)
Non-regulated- General waste
Hazardous- Hazardous and toxic chemical and materials.(X-ray fixer and cleaner, lead foils, and amalgam wastes.
must follow federal, state, and local regulation
hazardous waste must be disposed of within 90 days from date of accumulation
Sharp disposal
consist of contaminated needle, anesthetic carpules, scalpel blades, wires, anything sharp tbh
place in a covered puncture- resistance, fluid-impervious, red sharp container labeled biohazardous
Record keeping
Responsibility of facility generating the hazardous waste material to ensure acceptable methos of waste disposal
dent office will be responsible for illegal dumping of hazardous material
legal responsibility which lies withing dent office is know as the “ cradle to grave liability”
Waste hauler
established credential
EPA approval
identifying contractor number
provide office w/ receipt of shipment upon waste removal
send a manifest to the office
Organization of record
record include How, When. Where, of the disposal
must include name, address and EPA generator ID number of agent
date of shipment
signature of waste transporter
hazardous waste disposal documentation must be maintained for min of 3 years
